Outfitting an F 850 GS

In October 2018 I got an email notice from my local BMW dealer, Big Twin of Boise, Idaho, that they had received a couple of F 850 GSes. If you wanted to come and see one, they had one on their show room floor. If you wanted to test ride one to contact Into the Horizon Adv Motorcycle rentals & tours, as Lance Gaines has a standing order to receive the first bike of each new GS model. My 2007 F 650 GS served me well for over 40,000 miles of commuting to work and exploring thousands of miles on forest service roads in the Boise and Payette National Forests, but it was time to consider replacing it.

I had been reading about the new F 850 GS and watching some YouTube videos, so was excited to take a test ride. For my birthday (68) I contacted Lance and rented his new F 850 GS for a ride in the Boise foothills. My choice of test routes for the Rallye edition (with all the bells and whistles) I rode was the road to Bogus Basin Ski Area, a 22-mile climb from 2,400 to 6,900 feet with almost continuous turns and switchbacks. The road past the ski area is dirt and is popular with local adventure riders. The bike had 400 miles on it, so was still being broken in.

Not Rob's test ride, but the bike he ended up buying. Oops! Spoiler alert ;)

The day was perfect Idaho fall weather, sunny and in the mid 60s with a light breeze. Being a weekday, the road was empty so I could just enjoy the responsiveness of the bike and the smooth power delivery of the parallel twin engine as I carved my way up the mountain towards the ski area. I had a giant smile on my face when I reached the parking lot. I totally enjoyed the bike on twisty asphalt, but it was time to try it on dirt. The ski area had fresh gravel on the parking lot, so I changed the ride mode to Enduro and rode slowly around the lots while standing on the pegs. The bike felt lighter that my F 650 GS, but didn't fit me quit as well with out handlebar risers and lower foot pegs. Lance's bike also didn't have any bags or boxes. My F 650 GS had Happy Trails Teton boxes, which added weight but also provide excellent weather tight storage. After playing in the parking lot, I headed up the dirt road for another 10 miles, enjoying how well this bike handled the dips, rocks and ruts that the road acquired since the last time it was graded.

After four hours of putting the bike through its paces, I returned it to Lance and knew I had found the right bike. My 2007 F 650 GS was reliable and in great shape, and I had no reason to feel it would not continue to serve me well for the rest of my motorcycle riding days. I had to think about it for a while and talk to my wife, as we were now on retirement income and this was a major purchase.

Karoo 3 tires.

In January, after she completed the primary work on our taxes, she came to me and said, "I think you should get the new bike." I had been searching aftermarket parts websites like Wunderlich America and Touratech USA and knew exactly what modifications I wanted, things like skid plates, engine crash bars, handle bar risers, lowered foot pegs, a better wind screen and luggage. I knew this would add at least $3,000 to the total, but knew from experience that any bike I rode needed them.

I checked out the Big Twin website to see what bikes they had in stock before I made the 40-mile drive to talk to Sales Manager Chuck Gregg. The first thing I noticed was they were listing both the F 850 GS and GS Adventure in stock. I had not expected the GSA to be available for another 6-12 months. The GSA already had most of the stuff I wanted plus a bigger fuel tank and much better wind screen. The second thing I noticed was Big Twin was closing their doors. The owner (Fred Wiley) was retiring after 41 years in the motorcycle business and sold the business to Dennis Dillon Power Sports. The good news was his employees were all going to be moving with the franchise. Fred had a great team and his customers are loyal.

Bar risers from Touratech.

I contacted Chuck and he said Lance had the first one, but he was getting two more in, a lowered Rallye and a Granite Grey Metallic with the premium package. I told him to call me when they arrived and were out of the crate because I wanted to come take a look before placing an order. I also contacted Lance and asked him about his first impressions of the GSA.

Chuck called at the end of January and I made arrangements to come see a GSA. The Granite Grey really caught my eye and I was impressed with the package out of the box. There were only a few changes I would want before I took possession. The bike out of the box came with the comfort seat, 90/10 street tires and a cheap plastic engine skid pan. I am 6 feet, 4 inches tall with a 35-inch inseam and felt the flatter Rallye seat would suit me better. The skid plate need to be replace with a real metal one and I wanted 50/50 tires, as I spend a majority of my time on forest service roads. The handle bars needed to be raised as well.

Rack and mount for Mosko Moto soft panniers.

Chuck arranged to install Metzeler Karoo 3 adventure tires dedicated to off-road expeditions and featuring both off-road traction and on-road stability. They are specifically engineered for medium to large displacement bikes. My previous experience has been mostly on Continental TKC80 tires. I am looking forward to comparing handling and tire wear.

The new skid plate is the BMW Enduro Aluminum engine guard, although a Touratech skid plate would have been an excellent alternative. The Touratech 35mm bridged handlebar risers for the F 850 GS adds bar height and braces the handlebar clamps to minimize bar twist/flexs. There was an issue with the securing bolts, however; this bike came configured for GPS and the long bolts that allowed for attachment of the GPS mount were not available yet from Touratech. The parts department at DD Power Sports found an alternate source and put them on order along with the Rallye seat.

Close-up of mount and rack on right side.

While I was waiting for the various part to come in, I tackled the issue of luggage for the new bike. I really liked my Happy Trails Teton boxes. They were rugged, well made, kept water and dust out and if you laid down the bike at slow speed (which is how it always happens to me when I choke and pull in the clutch or front brake instead of hitting the gas and riding it out), made picking up my F 650 GS easy. Their downside was weight and the bruises on my calves I always seemed to have after a challenging back country ride. I'm a big fan of MOTOTREK YouTube videos, and their video on hard versus soft motorcycle panniers convinced me to consider Mosko Moto's Back Country 35L panniers. They are almost identical to the soft panniers with the BMW logos and are made in Portland, Oregon. I like their rugged construction and the presence of the MOLLE expansion system so you can add space easily. They are also a lot lighter than aluminum panniers and should be a lot softer if I hit them with the back of my legs.

I needed two other things. First, an adapter for the muffler side of the bike's rack. The one designed for the BMW R 1200 GSA works fine for the F 850 GSA. Second, a Touratech Large Side stand Foot to stabilize the bike when parked. Before I put one of these on my F 605 GS, my bike was always trying to fall over unless I found a flat rock or piece of wood to put the stand on.

Pannier rack on left side of the bike.

On February 21, Chuck called to tell me by bike was ready, and I picked it up at noon the next day. Southwestern Idaho had just come off a winter storm watch with 24 hours of sunny weather forecast before the next storm was expected. While the roads were clear, but the temperature was going to be below 25 degrees for the day. I caught a ride with a friend who needed to go to Boise anyway and was at DD Power Sport around 11:30. Chuck spent over an hour going over all the features of my new bike.

The 40-mile ride back to my hobby ranch in the Boise mountains was uneventful, but due to cold roads, new tires and lack of experience on the bike, I kept it in rain mode the whole trip. I had to make one adjustment before I rode the bike; the shift lever needed to be raised to allow my Alpinestars boots to operate the shifter. I am ordering lowered foot pegs from Suburban Machinery to improve my leg room and make operating the shifter easier with my boots.

Side stand enlarger.

It took me about two hours once I had the bike home to adjust the handle bars, install the side stand foot and mount the soft panniers. Then all I had to do was wait until the weather got more conducive to riding around my mountain home!

Ready to ride!

Seattle, WA-(April 3, 2019) The BMW R1250GS has a more powerful motor and upgraded electronics package making this legendary adventure bike even better. By using a longer stroke, bigger bore and clever variable intake cam geometry, the engineers at BMW added power right where you want it. When doing a top gear roll-on or passing a car on an open highway you can feel it has more usable power over the previous models.

“It has everything we loved about the R1200GS but with more power and on-board technology that feels more refined.
The team at Touratech has been making accessories for BMW’s GS models for over 25 years and they have just released a complete product range for the R1250GS to improve ergonomics, protect the motorcycle, and carry gear for a weekend tour, backcountry adventure, or the trip of a lifetime. Below are highlights from the product range, or you can see everything on the Touratech USA website.

Zega Pro Pannier System

The R1250GS is a great choice for touring, riding two-up or traveling the world. The first thing riders will need to add is secure storage, whether it be for commuting to the office or exploring forest roads. Zega Pro panniers provide water-proof storage with the security of keyed locks and protection that only hard luggage can provide. The solid aluminum construction offers a range of bolt on accessories to extend the capacity and utility of the boxes. Retail $1,349 - $1,499

Skid Plate

The smooth power delivery on the new boxer motor is deeply satisfying when riders twist the throttle. Protecting this powerplant with a Rallyeform Skidplate is a great way to keep the boxer motor delivering smiles. The exhaust headers are vulnerable to damage on R1250GS. Touratech’s RallyeForm Skidplate protects the headers with 4mm aluminum hydroformed to fit like a glove maximizing protection and maintaining good clearance from the front wheel.
Crash Bars

The signature look of the boxer comes courtesy of the cylinders sticking out in plain sight. This bike needs crash bars to protect the exposed cylinders and valve covers which hit the ground when the bike goes down. Made from 1-inch stainless steel tubing, these crash bars provide a cage that wraps around the cylinder and valve covers to protect them from the ground or other hazards. Touratech’s engineers take great care to design the bars in tight to keep the bike narrow for navigating obstacles and also to preserve lean angle. Available in Silver, electropolished finish. Retail $399.95

Riding with friends is a lot of fun until the lights go out. Don’t let a rock to the headlight compromise your ride. Add a Touratech headlight guard that is designed to protect the glass but also accent the styling of the front LED. Riders can quickly remove the guard to wipe the dust of the glass and snap it back into place without even taking off riding gloves. Available in clear Polycarbonate plastic or black powder-coated stainless steel. Retail $149.95

The R1250GS is at home wandering off pavement onto dirt roads and brushy trails. When the road gets fun, it often has branches or foliage that grab the OEM mirrors. The Touratech mirrors can be folded in on the fly to eliminate the problem. Once on highway again, the rider can quickly fold them back out and they are still adjusted properly. The folding mirrors also hold position at highway speeds all day long. This is the perfect mirror for adventure riding and is available for the R1250GS and nearly every other model of motorcycle. Retail $99.90 (set of 2)

The R1250GS is at home on two-track and in rough terrain. Most riders find that increasing the bar height is better for standing when off-road. The engineers at Touratech have created three heights to choose: from 15mm, 25mm, and 40mm. Retail $79.95 - $94.95

The bottom of this tank bag is shaped to fit the unique shape of the R1250GS maximizing stability and use of space. Volume can be increased on-demand with the expansion zipper adding to capacity when the rider needs it. The removable map case on top has a clear window allowing visibility of a map or who is calling by phone. Retail $289

Soft forest ground, grass or loose gravel might just allow a R1250GS to take a dirt nap when the sidestand plunges into the ground. This can be prevented with the large sidestand foot which provides much more surface area. Retail $69.95

The low version of the Works Footpegs make it easier to reach and modulate the brake pedal and also provide more rider comfort with more distance from the seat to the pegs which reduces knee bend. It also makes the transition from sitting to standing easier for the rider and provides a feeling of lower center of gravity for the primary control point between rider and machine when standing and riding off-road. The pegs are tough stainless steel construction, have large openings to clear mud and are tapered to preserve lean angle on the R1250GS. The wide platform is a huge upgrade over stock pegs. Available in standard height and 0.8” lower than stock. Retail $189.95

Custom spring rates are selected to allow heavier or lighter riders to use the full range of the available ESA settings. Optimized damping profiles give the bike a more plush ride than stock or an even sportier feel at the press of a button. Retail $3,990

Edelweiss: The Best of Europe

TROP D’ACCIDENTS. RALENTIR. (Many accidents! Slow down!)

The yellow warning sign for motorcyclists screamed “fun ahead” as we sped past vineyards, golden and glistening with dew in the early-morning, late-September sunlight.

This was day four of an Edelweiss Bike Travel nine-day tour, and the pace had quickened considerably as we headed into the Vosges Mountains. Sweeping bends tightened into whiplash-sharp coils as the road steepened by exponential degrees.

By now, we’d broken into two groups. Behind, content with a more leisurely pace, our two lady riders, their spouses, and a sprinkling of others, mostly on Harleys. Ahead, myself, plus a six-pack of middle-age pals from Colorado here to ride. Björn Greibig, our 28-year-old tour guide on a BMW R nineT, poured on the gas. He tore through the mountains like Raffaele de Rosa. Perry Cogburn, on an aggressively agile Ducati Multistrada, stayed glued to his tail and I, on a BMW R 1200 GS Adventure, to Perry’s. It was exhilarating as we leaned through the curves at the max and exited near the redline for an absolute philistine thrill.

I was still grinning inanely five fun-filled hours later as we augered down through the hairpins to Ribeauvillé, with its half-timbered 14th-century buildings leaning drunkenly over meandering cobbled streets resembling a Hollywood stage set.

“If we knew our kids were riding like this, we’d take away their keys,” said 61-year-young Perry, laughing, as we dined that evening on mushroom soup and lamb stew washed down with a hearty Alsatian Sylvaner.

I’d signed up with Edelweiss Bike Travel for its “Best of Europe” five-country tour, looping west from Erding (43 km northeast of Munich) through the Black Forest, Alsace, northern Switzerland, Liechtenstein, the Austrian Tyrol, and Bavaria.

I rode R 1200 GS Adventure Triple Black, complete with keyless ignition and personalized monogramed leather notebook. At home, I ride a 2009 R 1200 GS Adventure. This was my first time riding a water-cooled GSA model. The difference left me slack-jawed as we swept through the rolling hopland of Franconia and across the Fränkische Alb uplands, north of Erding. Not only did this bike have a far more precise gear box, Shift Assistance Pro, throttle-by-wire, and other high-tech gizmos, it had a 25 percent increase in ponies that generated blistering acceleration as we scattered fresh-fallen leaves on the straights. The bike seemed infinitely more refined and responsive, teasing the twisties with the gazelle-like agility of an F 800.

The first day’s undulating terrain proved ideal for familiarizing ourselves with our bikes. Giant wind turbines studded the hilltops, their blades scything a leaden sky overlaying a precise checkerboard of fields farmed with Teutonic efficiency. Long scimitar curves gradually gathered into tighter arcs as, beyond Eichstätt, we dipped down through forested hillsides to dance alongside the River Althaud. At Dinkelsbühl—an archetypcal walled medieval town seemingly pickled in aspic—we joined the scenic “Romantic Road” stitching together a quintessential fairytale Germany of Middle Age villages pinpointed from afar by church steeples topped by pomegranate-shaped domes.

I’m English. I feel warm, fuzzy pride for Stratford-Upon-Avon, Oxford and York. But my bubble burst as we rode into Rothenburg—Germany’s largest and best preserved walled city—at the end of our day’s 270-kilometer ride. “Wowww!” I exclaimed predictably as we passed through the Galgentor Gate into a time-warp of iconic medieval Germanic cuteness. The sloping cobbled lanes were well-worn and slippery. I rode on the pegs. Mostly spared from Allied bombing in WWII, Rothenburg’s higgledy-piggledy houses date back to the Crusades. Our lodging, the 12th-century Hotel Reichsküchenmeister, packed a thousand years of history beneath its eaves. A striking counterpoint, my chicly rehabbed accommodation was a honeypot of contemporary styling and accoutrements.

From Rothenburg we turned west through the rippling farmland of Baden-Württemberg. At the hilltop town of Langenburg we corkscrewed into the valley of the River Jagst on the L1025. The flexuous, fastidiously manicured highway unfurled flat and fast, scrolling in broad arcs past a quilt of golden wheat, purple flax, and bottle-green meadows. We broke for lunch at Kloster Schöntal, a palatial Cistercian monastery and extravagant Baroque cathedral. The sun was now struggling to break through, and crepuscular rays streamed down like a celestial blessing. But chill autumnal showers stung like a wildcat’s bite as we sped west through Möckmuhl for Mosbach. I kept the traction control in “DYNAMIC” and “RAIN” modes.

The swooping curves and horseshoe bends limning the River Neckar delivered us to Hirschhorn—a great place to break at the hilltop castle-hotel, with a Rapunzel tower and a sensational view over the valley, carved deep into the wooded hills of the Odenwald uplands.

Edelweiss, wisely, operates a strict no bottles and throttles policy. I enviously eyed a tourist knocking back a glass of foamy Erdinger Urweisse.
Soon enough we arrived in Heidelberg and the Hotel Hirschgasse, an ivy-clad, rambling, 15th-century gem heaped with antiques. This being Oktoberfest, the town’s über-historic core was thronged. Every plaza hosted a music concert (from medieval to oom-pah-pah and techno) crammed with beer-swilling celebrants served by Dirndl-clad wenches.

We burst out of town, streaking south on the Autobahn in a devil-take-the-hindmost dash for Karslruhe. I took the GSA well over the ton. When my throttle hand started to tingle from the vibrations, I eased off and watched tour leader Axel Allgaier disappear on a Triumph Tiger 1050, tailed by Perry on his 1078cc air-cooled V-twin. Then David Briedenbach flashed past on a hypersonic speed test aboard a 160hp BMW K1600 GTL. He clocked 250kph before his wife Jeri, riding pillion, tapped his shoulder: “Enough!”

The real fun began south of Baden-Baden as the B500—Germany’s oldest panoramic highway—coiled sharply into the Schwarzwald (Black Forest) like a viper that had been stamped on. The writhing snake of a road required hyper-attention and a judicious, nonstop interplay of throttle and clutch. I kept my eye on the Ducati’s bootylicious rear end as Perry and Axel taught a masterclass in calm, composed mountain riding. I loved it—and so did the bike. Superbly balanced, the GSA displayed massive athletic credentials as it powered effortlessly uphill on the switchbacks and flew through the fanged bends like a buck.

Drizzle and clouds couldn’t dampen our dopamine day. Nor even the dense veil of cold fog shrouding the gunmetal-gray Mummelsee—at 1,036 meters elevation the literal high point of the celebrated “Schwarzwaldhochstraße,” acclaimed as one of Europe’s top ten driving routes.

Then down through tight hairpins to Freudenstad, and on through Wolfach and Schweighausen…over the Rhine and into France…and along the “Route du Vin” to postcard-perfect Ribeauvillé, nestled in a valley framed by vineyards—golden corduroys on the hillsides—and hilltop castle ruins.

Edelweiss had classified day four as a “rest day.” The three ladies opted for spa treatments and shopping. “Hell no!” the guys exclaimed as one, opting for our adrenalin-fueled “Route des Crêtes” loop through the Vosges Mountains. Our high topped out at Collet du Linge (987m) and the Musée Mémorial du Linge WWI battle site. Talk about an antidopaminergic! This somber and emotionally wrenching memorial museum occupies a rocky mountaintop ridge crisscrossed with rock-lined trenches, bunkers, and rusty barbed wire barricades. Here the Germans organized their defensive positions to prevent the French advance on Colmar. In the summer of 1915, more than 17,000 men died in intense hand-to-hand fighting, involving flame-throwers in trenches mere meters apart. I departed feeling melancholic.

“Today we ride through the Black Forest again, and we’ll have fun riding the twisty roads into Switzerland,” said Axel at our next-morning briefing. I hadn’t imagined the Black Forest to be so mountainous, so cut through by steep gorges. But back across the Rhine we were soon climbing through dark forests of fir and spruce on a tortuous mountain switchback that delivered us to Kandel—a wind-swept pass at 1,242 m, with vast views over the Rhine Valley. Then down, down, down at an exhilarating Daytona pace to Hexenlochmühle for cappuccinos and Blackforest cake in an old mill-restaurant festooned with Cuckoo Clocks.

Björn showed me the Gear Shift Assist Pro. I soon got the hang of this wizard gadget, enabling me to power up through the gears on full throttle, while deftly blipping the gas for clutchless downshifts into the curves. Plus, the GSA’s lean-angle-sensitive dynamic traction control tightened up the suspension in the tight stuff and whipped my back end into line when it started to break lose on throttle-to-the-stop exits. But Bob, ahead of me on a R 1200 RS and pushing hard to keep up with Perry, twice almost lost his rear end as he fishtailed going into tight curves at speed. Then he misjudged a bend, careened over the center line into a guard rail, and went down. Fortunately, no traffic was coming the other way. He was shaken but unharmed, and the bike sustained only minor damage.

We rode on for a picnic lunch in a meadow on the edge of Naturpark Südschwarzald. Edelweiss’s purpose-designed support van (driven each day in rotation by Axel, Björn, and our third guide, Mike Woltering) featured retractable shelving and on-board refrigeration. Impressive! We lunched on a King’s banquet: salad, sausage, ham, cheeses, sweet pepper, breads, fruits, and wine gums and Toblerone chocolate.

Soon came the Swiss border and Schaffhausen, with an obligatory pause at Rheinfall—a raging whitewater spectacle (the largest waterfall in Europe) spanning 150 meters and tumbling 23 meters with a Harley’s roar—before checking into the Hotel Promenade.

We awoke to blue skies—finally—and the start of an incredible day. First up, Lake Constance, with its peninsulas surging into Caribbean-blue water. At Ermatingen we turned south to follow intestinal B roads through archetypal Swiss landscapes of lime-green meadows munched by cows wearing bells, quaint villages pinned by church spires, and Swiss chalets adorned with red, pink, and purple geraniums. The distant Alps drew us on as the scenery built like a Mozart concierto.

Beyond Urnäsch we spiraled up into the Alpstein beneath an intense Paul Klee cobalt sky. We lunched at Schwägalp beneath the jagged Säntis peak—at 2,501 meters the highest mountain in Switzerland’s Alpstein massif. While most of the tour group rode the cable car for a magnificent panoramic vista, I stayed below to photograph. The lead group’s tight-pack race pace was killing me! After lunch, I switched to the second group, strung out, with each person riding at their own slower pace. I could photograph each as they passed, then overtake them to await their passage further along the route. Coulda, shoulda figured that out long ago!

Above Gams we stopped to take in the breathtaking view over Leichtenstein—a mega-wealthy, pipsqueak principality embedded deep in the Alps. We seesawed downhill into the fairytale nation and within minutes crossed to the Austrian border. Benoit, from Canada, stripped off his Joe Rocket Ballistic riding suit, donned sneakers… then sprinted into Austria and back, to the amusement of the border guards.

The grandeur built in crescendo as we clawed past ski resorts of the Tyrolean Alps. Looping in sensuous curves, the FaschinaStraße snaked through long tunnels to deposit us at Furkajoch, a mountain pass (1,760 m) with stupendous views. Then down dizzyingly through Damuls to climb once again, on the Bregenzerwaldestraße (B200), through classic Tyrolean hamlets framed by sheer, snowcapped mountains. Above Schröcken, a long, fast, banked, and curving climb atop stilts slingshot us up the final switchback to the Hochtannbergpass (1,679 m), separating the watersheds of the mighty Rhine and Danube rivers. The sky was thick with pewter clouds, ominously threatening snow as we pulled in to the Wanderhotel Jägeralpe, hunkered beneath the pass.

The next morning, I looked out on a wintry landscape, the ski resort buried beneath fresh snow and a charcoal sky. The GSA’s temperature gauge displayed 4 degrees C as we set off in snow flurries! We cautiously descended the switchback to Warth and the Lechtal Valley, framed by serrated summits shrouded in wispy clouds. Warming coffee and light lunch awaited at Schloss Linderhof, where Edelweiss had included a guided tour. Inspired by Versailles, the baroque palace—the smallest of three palaces built by ‘Mad’ King Ludwig II of Bavaria—drips with enough gold to make Trump green with envy.

We were now only two hours from Erding. We sped through Bavaria, weaving a convoluted route between two major storms to arrive wet and elated at the end of a spectacular nine-day tour.

BMW sending 114 R12GS Rallye bikes to Mongolia for GS Tropy

In June 2018 the BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy will be heading to Mongolia. One hundred and fourteen BMW R 1200 GS Rallye motorcycles have been prepared for the rigors of the extreme adventure competition. The bikes are now on their way to Ulaanbaatar.

Fortunately the GS motorcycles come well equipped from the factory, so preparations to equip the machines for the GS Trophy competition are modest: all the parts required are available as ex-works optional equipment or from the Original BMW Motorrad Accessories catalogue.

The R 1200 GS Rallye

The BMW GS concept has embodied the desire for adventure for almost 40 years. This applies especially to the GS motorcycles with the opposed-twin boxer engine. The big GS allows motorcyclists to explore the most remote corners of the world – an idea that has already inspired numerous globetrotters to set off on their travels.

For 2018 it will again be the BMW R 1200 GS that competitors will ride, this time the Rallye variant (first introduced in 2017) which particularly emphasizes the off-road character of the R 1200 GS. The Lupine Blue metallic color and in particular the Cordoba Blue powder-coated frame go together well with the black drivetrain and gold-finished brake calipers to create the sportiest standard big GS of all times.

Functionally speaking, the new R 1200 GS Rallye underscores this claim with numerous refined details. These include radiator trim in robust stainless steel, a radiator guard that protects the radiator from stone chips and a special frame guard protecting the section of the suspension where boots can leave unwanted scrape marks. The R 1200 GS Rallye rolls on cross-spoke wheel with great off-road capability and knobby Metzeler Karoo 3 tires.

Mechanics have added various parts from the Original BMW Motorrad Accessories catalogue to further enhance the GS’s performance and protection.

Adjustable rider foot pegs: The spring-loaded rider foot pegs offer increased comfort when riding in a seated position. When standing, especially during off-road riding, the tread deflects to give a zigzag outline for better grip and control. Adjustable between three heights.

Adjustable foot brake lever: Wider than before and height-adjustable thanks to a patented hinge mechanism, the foot brake lever improves the control of brake pressure when riding off-road in a standing position.

Adjustable gear lever: Provides improved control when standing.

Stainless steel cylinder head cover guard: If the worst comes to the worst, the cylinder head cover guard provides additional protection against damage. It also accentuates the exceptional design of the boxer engine.

Stainless steel engine protection bar: The stainless steel, electropolished engine protection bar provides effective protection for the cylinders without compromising the lean angle. Also combines perfectly with the cylinder head cover guard.

Enduro aluminum bash plate: This sturdy enduro aluminum bash plate was specially constructed for off-road use and provides optimal protection for the lower section of the engine.

Headlight guard: Protects the headlight during off-road riding (not homologated for road use). Quick and easy handling due to snap lock mechanism.

Stainless steel luggage grid: Robust luggage made of electropolished stainless steel.

Bag for pillion seat: This waterproof bag attaches to the pillion seat and offers 14l of storage (which can be increased to 18 l) – just the right amount for day trips.

First aid kit, large: DIN-Norm motorcycle first aid kit. Space saving and waterproof.

BMW ADVANTEC Ultimate engine oil: With original BMW Advantec Ultimate engine oil, the motorcycle will run the same as it did on the first day even after thousands of miles. It is perfectly attuned to your machine's engine because it was developed by the same specialists who built it.

SHOEI® Safety Helmet Corp is proud to announce the Spring '18 arrival of the all-new NEOTEC II to the North American marketplace, as well as the specially developed, SENA-exclusive SRL Bluetooth Communication System designed for seamless integration with the NEOTEC II.

Sena Technologies, Inc., the global leader in Bluetooth innovation for the motorsports, action sports and outdoor sports lifestyles, has announced the release of the revolutionary Sena 30K Mesh Intercom Communication System. The 30K is here to simplify the way riders communicate using Sena's new Mesh Intercom Technology™, allowing for a more user-friendly setup as well as self healing and self optimizing functionality to keep riding groups connected without worrying about who's connected to who and if you're out of range. This is the future of motorcycle communication.

Sena is taking things to the next level with Mesh Intercom Technology. Sena's new technology allows for riders to seamlessly stay in groups, whether using private or public mode, the Mesh Intercom intelligently self-heals, making the 30K Sena's most user friendly model to date.

With one click of a button, instantly and seamlessly connect to a virtually unlimited number of 30K riders within a mile range using the public mode feature. In private mode a rider can create a group, or mesh, with up to 16 riders at a range of up to 1.2 miles, while an endless amount of guests can listen in. When riding with five or more users, the Mesh Intercom will intelligently keep the group connected at a range of up to five miles. The private mode allows an endless amount of Guest mesh users to listen in on the conversation as well.

With the 30K you won't have to leave Bluetooth users behind, the 30K houses Mesh and Bluetooth processors which allow both functions to work in conjunction with each other. Each 30K allows for Bluetooth pairings with a smartphone and GPS as well as three other Bluetooth devices, while the device itself acts as bridge to bring all Bluetooth intercom users into the Mesh group. This way, 30K riders can still intercom via Mesh with Bluetooth only headsets such as the 20S EVO, 10S, or 10R.

The 30K packs the same coveted features of previous Sena devices such as Audio Multitasking, the ability to take phone calls, listen to music, hear turn-by-turn GPS directions, built-in FM Radio, Advanced Noise Control™, and more. The 30K features a new quick charge feature that allows for three hours of Mesh Intercom use or five hours of Bluetooth Intercom with just 20 minutes of charge time. Also, users may conveniently manage and navigate through the 30K's many features with the 30K Utility App. The 30K will be available in both a single and a dual kit retailing for $329 single / $579 dual.

Brake safer with BRAKE FREE

Brake Free Technologies Launches Indiegogo Campaign for Smart Helmet Attachment

Brake Free aims to multiply the visibility of motorcycle riders with their advanced lighting technology

The team behind Brake Free, the newest innovation in motorcycle safety, launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo on March 27th, 2017.

Brake Free is a one-of-a-kind smart, high-visibility helmet accessory that commands attention. It utilizes the latest in LED technology to drastically improve rider visibility to surrounding drivers, day and night. Mounted on the back of a helmet, Brake Free is at eye level so all surrounding drivers will see the rider.

"This could be the biggest safety improvement for motorcyclists in a while," said Dennis "Budman" Kobza Jr., 2017 AMA Outstanding Road Rider Award recipient, California Motorcycle Safety Committee member and owner of Bay Area Riders Forum. "Helmet technology has gotten better, so has the gear, electronic aids have gotten better, but this is unique in terms of raising the awareness of drivers who surround us so often. I think this will save lives and many broken bodies as well."

Brake Free uses sensors to detect braking, so it is completely wireless, and requires no connection to the motorcycle’s electronics. With its sensors, Brake Free automatically lights up no matter how the rider slows down: braking, engine braking or downshifting to alert surrounding drivers.

"Currently on the market there is hi-vis gear like jackets, vests, helmets, and pants," said John Clelland, Founder & Chairman of Nor Cal Ducati D.O.C. "It’s a step in the right direction, but it is a static piece and will not capture the attention of a semi-glazed driver. What’s nice about Brake Free is it illuminates and flashes, which makes it very dynamic and can save a rider’s life."

"At Brake Free we are borrowing some of the advanced manufacturing techniques from companies like Audi and BMW", explained Ian Dunn, industrial designer at Brake Free Technologies. "We're delivering a safety product that is brighter and thinner than any other in an application like this." Brake Free uses a shape that is optimized to fit most helmets and to maximize the surface area of the lights. It uses a total of a 100 super bright LEDs to get the job done.

"What's special about Brake Free is it can detect deceleration in the direction of travel" said Johan Boot, technical co-founder at Brake Free Technologies. "Even when the head of the rider moves side to side or tips forward". Brake Free's proprietary algorithm allows it to detect braking and ignore all other movements.

Phil Ammendolia, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at LS2 Helmets, said, "After nearly 42 years of working in the motorcycle industry, and 17 specializing in helmets, one thing continues to prove true. A rider can NEVER be too visible. The Brake Free system is about as simple as it gets, yet offers a level of visibility unavailable prior to its introduction. Brake Free is a simple and effective device that will dramatically improve the safety margin for all riders, regardless of skill level."

"We are extremely excited to introduce Brake Free to the motorcycle and scooter rider community," said Alex Arkhangelskiy, CEO and Co-Founder of Brake Free Technologies. "It is a much needed safety innovation that will help solve the visibility problem and save many lives. Brake Free is the first safety accessory to combine the latest sensor and LED technologies in a simple and beautiful product that riders will be proud to wear."

Giant Loop updates popular MoJavi saddlebag

Giant Loop says motorcyclists should enjoy freedom of choice! In response to the popularity of Giant Loop's motorcycle soft luggage colorways, the adventure proof packing and gear systems innovator now offers its pioneering horseshoe-shaped minimalist saddlebag, the MoJavi Saddlebag, in all five color options: yellow, white, gray, orange and black. Riders can choose a color that matches or compliments their motorcycle's color scheme, or they can select a color for conspicuity or any other personal preference.

First introduced in 2010, Giant Loop's MoJavi Saddlebag improves rider endurance and comfort by taking the weight out of a backpack and putting it on the motorcycle or snow bike. Specifically designed to carry just the essentials needed for a day trip or trail ride, the MoJavi Saddlebag is the slim, trim bag for inner tubes, tools, fluids and other save-a-ride necessities. It straps on and stays on no matter what.

"Probably the best additions were the Giant Loop 'MoJavi' saddlebags, which is where we stuffed all of our heavy items. Our shoulders thanked us. With the weight off our backs and secured to the bikes, we could ride twice as long without getting tired," wrote Quinn Cody, multiple Baja 1000 winner and top 10 Dakar Rally finisher, in Dirt Bike magazine. The MoJavi Saddlebag also is used by competitors in international rally racing, as well as by medical support riders at events and races.

Other 2017 updates include new sewn-on molded rubber graphics and new options for adding components to expand the MoJavi Saddlebag's capacity. To protect against exhaust heat, the MoJavi Saddlebag includes a Giant Loop Hot Springs Heat Shield kit. MOLLE-style lash points on the MoJavi's top/center allow mounting of additional gear or modular expansion options, such as Giant Loop's Possibles Pouch or Klamath Tail Rack Pack.

The MoJavi Saddlebag's packable volume measures 12 liters (two 6-liter side pockets). With a flexible mounting system - quick adjusting fender hooks and webbing anchor strap included - the Mojavi straps on or off virtually any bike in seconds. Made in USA with military-spec materials and construction, the MoJavi Saddlebag is backed by Giant Loop's limited lifetime warranty. USA MSRP is $199.

The MoJavi Saddlebag is available at Giant Loop's showroom in Bend, Oregon, online at www.giantloopmoto.com and from powersports dealers across the USA via Tucker Rocky Distributing, as well as from international distributors around the world. Giant Loop is a rider-owned company that designs and tests products for powersports and outdoor adventure in Bend, Oregon.
Member Tested: Sidi Crossfire Boots

Never purchase a wear-item by mail-order on the eve of a major trip! I know, I know…but logic be damned. Two years ago I took a shine to Forma’s ruggedly handsome Adventure boot and ordered a pair online mere days before setting out to learn badass off-road techniques at California’s Rawhyde Academy. Now, I’m no “Dog Star” when it comes to math, but I do know that the 45 Euro-size boots that arrived at my door were no 10.5 U.S. equivalents. In fact, they were big enough to fit a Sasquatch.

“Send ‘em back, Baker!” said the left side of my brain. “Nothing a double pair of ski socks can’t cure,” replied my dominant right side, signing off on two years in which I clodhopped around like Herman Munster. Other than that, I adored ‘em.

BMW MOA 2016 proved an inspirational place and time to upgrade. I tried on half a dozen marques and types before easing into an eye-catching pair of Sidi Crossfire 2s. If there could be a motorcyclist’s equivalent of Cinderella’s slipper, this was it. They were as snug and form-fittingly comfy as a pair of sneakers. With a major off-road trip to Baja California coming up, this newest evolution of Italian company Sidi’s top-of-the-line off-road boot had me sold. I ordered a pair from Motonation, the company that represents Sidi in the USA.

The Crossfire is intended as a serious off-road/adventure boot designed, above all, for maximum protection and comfort. But trust the Italians to conjure such sophisticated Lamborghini-like styling. Imagine BMW’s GS Adventure boot crossed to StormTrooper footwear on steroids.

With enough armor-plating to stop a rhino, the boots aren’t light, though not heavy, mind you. Right out the box you get a sense that this is top-quality, don’t-mess-with-me footwear in a league of its own. Stitching (double-stitched in stress areas), for example, is superbly done and the adjustable screw-on plastic protectors match seamlessly. Plus the anatomical fit is as near perfect as I could imagine. I wear a 10.5 U.S. My 44 Euro Sidis were true to size. The sole is slim, and proved perfectly proportional to my foot shape. Even though I wear a pair of knee-length ski socks inside my boot, my toes weren’t scrunched. After my first ride—a full nine-hour jaunt to the Horizons Unlimited Travelers Meeting, in Yosemite, California—my feet felt as fresh and comfortable as the moment I eased into the boots. (The Crossfire TA version is a tad wider, but riders with wide feet might also consider going up a size; the boot is available in sizes 7-13.) I’ve worn some nice fitting boots in my time, but nothing quite like this; did I mention the soft inner lining of Cambrelle?

I also appreciated the inch-deep, elasticated, softly padded top gaiter seal, which wraps snugly above the calf muscle just below the knee and is lined with Teflon mesh that Sidi claims will prevent absorption of water and sweat. The boots aren’t waterproof, but darn near. Snaking up into the Sierra Nevada, I hit prolonged showers. Nothing heavy, but enough to get a sense that the Crossfire will resist a good dousing.

The entire “base material” appears to be supple leather. Actually, it’s synthetic. Sidi uses its own proprietary material called Technomicro. This composite micro fiber is made from strands less than one-thousand the thickness of silk, bonded with special resins to produce a kind of Cyborg leather. Lighter. Softer. Stronger. And, Sidi claims, “water-repellant, quick-drying, breathable and permeable to water vapor… abrasion- and mildew-resistant” and “easier to clean than leather.” Wow! If this were a real Cyborg I’d date her.

The Techmicro base—white in my case (the Crossfire comes in ten different color combinations)—seals at the top and mid-section with two broad Velcro flaps that draw closed to the boot’s outer side. The base is encased by a flexible injection-molded plastic wrap affixed and hinged to the ankles, and to which are attached three thicker, rigid plastic protectors for ankles, shin and calfs. The calf and shin plates can be adjusted for a wider diameter (22 inches is the maximum) to accommodate fatter legs or knee braces, or to wear your pants inside your boots. The entire leg is thus protected, all-around.

Additional hard plastic shells protect the entire foot area, including a rigid, anatomically shaped, shock-resistant heel and a toe guard extending up to the metatarsal the full width of the boot. The toe guard thickens on the inner top side at the shift and brake lever points. The toe of the molded, anti-skid sole is guarded by a screw-in metal plate. Plus, the inner arch features a thick heat-resistant changeable pad affixed by screws atop a larger plastic plate that gives rigidity to the lower boot.

The protective covers draw close with a four-strap cam-lock buckle system that locks to the outer side. Even when wearing gloves, the four metal hasps were easy to mate into their plastic cam-lock buckles, which snapped shut securely. The hasps attach to plastic straps that can be adjusted—shorter or longer—for a perfect fit. I’d read that adjusting the straps is easy. Not! I was flummoxed by what visually seemed like a simple task. I told you… I’m no Dog Star! Fortunately, I didn’t need to adjust the straps. The factory default was perfect.

The real beauty of the Crossfires is that the boots flex. The hinged ankle and flexible vamp (no plate covers the upper midsole) let the boot pivot forward, assisted by a smaller hinge further up the calf. The boot is designed so you don’t overdo it. I reckon the maximum flex at about 20 degrees from vertical, giving the boot on the foot a nice “broken-in” feel straight out the box. A week later, riding off-road in Baja California, the flex proved super handy when standing on the pegs in the rough stuff. I began to understand why many a motocross champ swears by Sidi Crossfires.

And yet…while the Crossfire toe profile is svelte and low-slung, getting under my 1200 GSA’s shifter in first and second gear wasn’t easy. The sole and toe box have virtually no flex at all, and the ankle is rigid, too, so I couldn’t “flip” my foot. In fact, it’s hard to feel any contact with the shift and brake pedals. When standing on the pegs the forward flex helped get under the shifter. But when seated, I frequently missed a gear. I even began to shift using the sole lip, lifting the shifter up from the side by raising my leg (after a couple of hours I got muscle ache). I understand all the stiffness is a compromise for better protection, but for bikers who aren’t going to do much off-roading, the lack of flex and sensitivity are major negatives. Plus, Nancy Sinatra surely wasn’t thinking of Crossfires when she sang “These Boots are Made for Walking.” (For that, even my Munster-sized Formas proved perfect.)

All the plate components are replaceable and, like the Techmicro base, are available in a variety of color combos for the fashion-conscious. The SRS model also features a bolt-on sole so that more aggressive riders can swap worn soles, while others can configure their boot for enduro, supermoto, etc. (Interestingly the Crossfire lacks a steel shank; strength is provided by a reinforced and removable nylon insole.)

Verdict? A superb, feature-packed high-end boot for serious off-road adventure riders who don’t plan on going urban. You’ll shell out just south of $600, for which you get über comfort and ultra-protection in a boot that many motocross champs acclaim as the best in class. For off-road riding I’m grinning, but maybe I need to invest in another pair of (correctly-sized) Forma Adventures for less demanding terrain. (In September 2016 Sidi introduced a Crossfire 3 motocross version.)

Dianese announces schedule for North American Custom Works Tour

Dainese USA announced today that its fifth annual North American Custom Works Tour will embark from New York City—the bespoke capital of the fashion world—at the end of September and conclude a little over a month later in New Hampshire. Along the way, the tour will visit a total of 17 locations across the U.S. and Canada, providing customers opportunities to be measured for custom-made Dainese leather motorcycle apparel.

In 1972, Dainese began making high-quality custom leather motorcycle garments for legendary racers like Giacomo Agostini in Molvena, a small Italian village in a region renowned for its leatherworking tradition. The program was eventually extended to European retail customers, and the North American Custom Works program started in 2012. All three North American Dainese D-Stores now employ Italian-trained tailors who can take the 26 measurements needed to create a Custom Works garment; one-off fitting events are occasionally organized at other shops, but the Custom Works Tour is a chance for customers to be professionally fitted at locations that don’t typically offer that service. This marks Dainese’s most extensive Custom Works tour to date, with six more stops than last year’s successful initiative.

Four different levels of customization are available, from aesthetically altered off-the-rack apparel to completely custom garments with unlimited add-on logos, names, numbers and/or color ways, etc. Following a fitting, a design is created and the garment is hand-built in Molvena by the same tailors who work on the suits of sponsored Dainese racers like Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden. In addition to racing suits, the Custom Works program offers custom leather jackets and leather pants.

"We’re really excited to see Dainese’s North American Custom Works Tour gaining such momentum," said Allan Jones, North American Custom Works Coordinator for Dainese. "Honestly, no other company comes close to offering such an extensive program for motorcycle apparel that is one-of-a-kind in terms of both fit and appearance, and now is the perfect time for customers to be personally fitted in order to have their garments ready for the 2017 riding season."

Dainese’s 2016 North American Custom Works Tour includes the following stops:

BMW introduces soft luggage for GS motorcycles

BMW Motorrad USA has introduced a totally new concept in on-board luggage and personal storage for the growing number of adventure riders exploring roads less traveled. Intended primarily for use when riding BMW GS-model motorcycles off-road, the Atacama Adventure Luggage System provides more flexibility when piloting expert-level, back-country trails as well as continuing the expedition off the bike at remote camping locations. The luggage system, which utilizes the same case carrier system developed for the original BMW aluminum cases, gives riders an extra level of flexibility and security when navigating more challenging riding conditions and further enhances the capabilities of the GS. Currently, the Atacama Adventure Luggage System is only available through authorized BMW Motorrad USA dealers.

“We are thrilled to offer this completely new line of on-board luggage for GS riders,” commented Michael Hernandez, Manager, Parts and Accessories, for BMW Motorrad USA. “This original BMW accessory product was developed in the U.S. with the needs of global adventure motorcycle riders in mind – a riding community that is expanding along the trend of riding big adventure motorcycles in further and further remote locations off road.”

The Atacama Adventure luggage can be installed easily if the motorcycle has the original/stock aluminum case mounts, and can be fit to the following motorcycles: 2004-present R 1200 GS/GS Adventure; 2008-present F 650/700/800 GS; 2014-present F 800 GS Adventure. There are four different fittings depending on which motorcycle the bags will go on, and the bags require adapters to properly fit on the stock BMW case mounts.

Retail cost of the Atacama side case kit is $861.50; the Duffel (top case) is $326.99. Adapter kits range from $126.99 to $243.99 depending on the application.

Other details of note include:

Max load 22 lbs per side; volume is asymmetric, with 6.6 gallons (25 liters) on the exhaust side and 9.2 gal (35 l) on the off-exhaust side

Max load of 11 lbs for top case (Atacama Duffel); volume is 10.6 gal (40 l)

Max speed of 81 mph with bags affixed

It's somewhat surprising to see BMW responding so quickly to the release of other soft luggage for adventure bikes like kits from Giant Loop and Mosko Moto. Mosko makes some bags that evoke Giant Loop, and these BMW bags certainly evoke Mosko Moto; in fact, word on the street is that Mosko is making them for BMW Motorrad, but we can only consider that rumor at this point and it has not been confirmed. You can download the entire press release from BMW Motorrad.

Giant Loop introduces ultralight camping gear

Adventure proof packing systems and gear company Giant Loop has introduced the GL Camping System, a collection of ultralight, compact, multi-functional, high performance, high value camping gear to help motorcycle travelers reduce the weight and bulk of their camping equipment. In keeping with the company's "go light, go fast, go far" approach to dual sport and adventure touring motorcycling, Giant Loop drew upon its staff members' passion for outdoor pursuits such as backpacking, rafting, mountaineering and backcountry skiing to assemble the GL Shelter System, GL Cooking System and other essentials.

GL Shelter System consists of the following:

Shelter Tarp 100, a 10' x 10' tarp that packs into its own integrated stuff sack, measuring 10" x 5" and weighing 20 oz. Made in USA, the Shelter Tarp 100 can be quickly deployed to create an alternative to a tent or to supplement a tent with covered space that can be configured in a multitude of ways, such as standing height protection from pouring rain or scorching sun while repairing a flat tire. It can also be pitched over a picnic table or used to create a group camping shelter. MSRP is $106.

Sleeping Sheath (aka bivy or sleeping bag cover) provides ultralight weather, dew and dirt protection to your sleeping bag, as well as boosting its warmth. Weighing just 9 oz. with a packed size of 8″ x 4″, the Sleeping Sheath features a zero seam tub floor, which means no seam sealing and no moisture entry from the floor. The top fabric is highly water repellent yet breathable, with an articulated hood that zips from hip-to-hip on either side, with a full no-see-um bug net hood. Draw cord stuff sack included. Made in USA. MSRP is $149.

Tyvek® Ground Sheet is waterproof and extremely durable, creating a minimalist "floor" for our GL Shelter System, protecting the Giant Loop Sleeping Sheath from dirt, sticks and rocks. With proper care, one Tyvek ground cloth will last for a multi-month and multi-thousand mile adventure. Pre-wash your Tyvek in a washing machine to soften and reduce rustling sounds while sleeping. MSRP is $12.

Aluminum Tarp Pole provides super strong aluminum support for the Shelter Tarp 100. The 45″ ultralight aluminum pole weighs just 3 oz. and folds into a 15″-long package. We recommend purchasing two poles to maximize shelter pitching options and configurations. MSRP is $14 each.

Aluminum Stake Set includes eight stakes, six 6″ and two 8″ stakes, weighing in at a featherweight 2.5 oz. Use shorter 6″ stakes around the perimeter of the Giant Loop Shelter Tarp 100 and the two longer 8″ Easton aluminum stakes should be used on the two main guy lines, providing additional anchoring power to secure Shelter Tarp. MSRP is $15.99.

Nite Ize Reflective Rope Pack comes in 50′ length, and is perfect for guy lines, hanging bear bags - and then being able to see where it is when you're done. Made of sturdy nylon with a special reflective strip woven into it that reflects brightly when light shines onto it, increasing night time safety. Also handy for zipper pulls and pull loops for the Aluminum Stake Set. MSRP is $11.99.

GL Cooking System consists of the following:

Vargo Titanium Converter Stove weighs just 1.6 oz. and features a folding stand that allows for compact packing and use as a standalone camping stove. Or, convert the titanium Vargo Hexagon Wood Stove into a complete multi-fuel stove by combining it with the Vargo Converter Stove. Its easy "drop-in" design turns the Hexagon into an effective windscreen while providing the ideal distance between stove and cookware for optimal cooking efficiency. Unlike other stoves, the Converter Stove will cook faster and won't leave soot on the bottom of your pots. Burns alcohol, fuel tabs or fuel gels. Simply flip the stove over to switch between alcohol and fuel tab/gel burning modes. Alcohol fuel capacity is 2 oz., which provides burn time for approximately one meal. De-natured alcohol is inexpensive and easy to source at hardware stores or automotive stores (gas drying product). MSRP is $39.95.

Vargo Titanium Hexagon Wood Stove uses easy-to-find, sticks and bits of wood - renewable fuel that can be found at campsites instead of carried on a motorcycle. Combined with the titanium Vargo Converter Stove, the Hexagon provides a windscreen and super stable cooking platform for a complete multi-fuel cooking system. This ultralight titanium camping stove weighs just 4.1 oz. and packs flat. MSRP is $59.95.

Vargo Titanium Flint Lighter makes an excellent companion for igniting the alcohol to start the Vargo Titanium Converter Stove, plus it delivers a dependable spark in the most adverse conditions - even after getting doused with water - making it the perfect choice for other fire lighting needs. Weighs 0.3 oz. MSRP is $19.95.

Alcohol Fuel Bottle transports enough clean burning denatured alcohol to cook several meals. Flip top for quick, easy stove filling. Leak proof to prevent spills. Ounce gradations on bottle for accurate fueling of titanium Vargo Converter Stove for camping. Weighs 1 oz. MSRP is $2.50.

Vargo Titanium Ti-Boiler Cooking Pot + Pan triples cooking capability and efficiency. The Ti-lite 900 ml titanium Mug pairs with a titanium 400 ml lid-pan to create a double boiler system that allows two items to be cooked at once to save time and fuel. The lid-pan is uniquely designed to nest on top of the mug to utilize the captured heat from the mug to cook food slowly preventing burning. Weighs just 6.6 oz. MSRP is $69.95.

Vargo Titanium Knife, Fork & Spoon ULV features a small, narrow design to make them lighter and more compact than standard camp cutlery. The matte finish pure titanium is biocompatible and will never corrode. Each piece weighs less than 0.5 ounces (14 grams). Mini carabiner included. MSRP is $24.95.

Vargo Titanium Funnel Flask features a patented integrated silicone funnel that is always right where you need it. Simply flip it up for easy filling, then fold it down to sip comfortably. The Vargo Titanium Funnel Flask holds 8 oz. of your favorite drink while imparting no taste, odor, or chemicals meaning you and your single malt stay pure. The funnel also functions as a perfect spout to pour your alcohol back into its original container. Weighs just 3.7 oz. MSRP is $74.95 (custom engraving is available for an additional $25).

FeatherLiteTM First Aid Kit 2.0 contains an assortment of first aid supplies needed to treat a variety of minor injuries. The outer case is constructed of durable, lightweight nylon cloth that is bright red to make it easy to locate. A detailed First Aid Kit Owner's Guide is also included with basic first aid instructions. Measures 8.25″ x 4.75″ x 2″ and weighs 8 oz. MSRP is $17.99.

FeatherLiteTM Survival Kit 1.0 contains an assortment of essential supplies for emergencies, including button compass, emergency blanket, emergency poncho , JetScreamTM Micro Whistle, 4″ See-MeTM Light Stick, StarFlash® Micro Mirror, survival towel and waterproof matches. Contents are stored inside a lightweight, compact orange pouch for convenient storage, measuring 7" x 6.5" x 1.5" and weighing 8 oz. MSRP is $15.99.

Rounding out the GL Camping System are the collapsible ultralight Joey Chair (MSRP $79.99), the Orion Tilt Hat Clip LED light (MSRP $24.99)secures to helmet visor or hat, the Princeton Tec BYTE LED Headlamp (MSRP $22.99) offers ultra-compact lighting, Tenacious TapeTM Repair Patches (MSRP $2.95) to make durable field repairs on fabric and the Zipper Care zipper cleaner and lubricant (MSRP $4.95) keeps zippers sliding smoothly.
